Where can you find blueprints for buildings? When I was in college in VA, I absolutely fell in love with the house that I lived in. I want to use that basic design for my own house, but I can't draw worth a squat. Where can I find the blue prints?

I no longer live in that house or have access to it (it's 440 miles away).

There is no "owner" ... the house belongs to the college, and they have not been helpful.

Depending on your local building codes, the county or state department or licensing can be your first step. They may have the name of the original contractor and, if with any luck, they may still be in business.... which gives you the opportunity to find out who the architects were.

Also, if there are any other houses in the neighborhood like yours ask your neighbors if they know who the builder was.

If you know the owner maybe they have a set you can copy or use. If not, get a tape and start measuring. Then either go to a local place where you can borrow a drawing set or get a buddy that can draw with pencil or AutoCad and have a crack at it. I did my own drawings for the house that I had built in VA and gave the new tenants a copy of them. If all else fails go to a local architect and break open the wallet. My first set of plans cost me $180. The set I drew up cost me about 20 hours. With AutoCad the last set I drew took about 16 hours. Even a local High School student could draw a set with some decent dimensions. Good luck.

Id suggest a few things if the house is still standing.

1 call the current owner.. and just explain it to them. If they dont have a rough plan, it probably doesnt exist. if they refuse.. #2

2. get whomever you dealt with to get you the lot your planning to build on.. to find it out for you.

3 call The board of assessors for the county, they should know if there is a plan.. or site plan.. most likely.. if not ask where you can get a plan.. im not sure on your county laws.. but our county actually has a website where you can view all land purchased sold etc.. and it has a vague description + lot + a rough plan + picture.. they should have SOMETHING... at worse they can tell you who could give you the info. if not.. damn.

4. call the houses city hall the base number... and ask for an extension to "explain what your looking for" and they should give you an idea of which direction your going...

5. call up a realty company and ask them to find out when the house was sold.. lol... just BS them saying that you swore this was the address and that you had seen a forsale sign. "please get me whatever info you can" most likely they will dig something up easily..

To be honest. there probably isnt a "blueprint" best youll get is a rough sketch that probably is off a few feet. Get someone to draw you some plans based off the house, and make them find it, after all your paying them...

good luck, hope this helps
