Wouldn't eating right and not drinking to excess and not using tobacco help? she said, "No!" Then why did so many less people die in California when they had the 55 mile per hour speed limit and enacted the seat belt law? I mean if it was predetermined what difference would it make?

Just think about that ... I sure wouldn't want to be a passenger on an airline when it is the pilot's time to go ....

Some religions do believe that God has a set time for you to live and die ....
predestination, foreordination, preordination, predetermination

(theology) being determined in advance; especially the doctrine (usually associated with Calvin) that God has foreordained every event throughout eternity (including the final salvation of mankind)

So, this lady may be telling you what her religion believes.

Any of the drivers could have heart-attacks, blow out a tire and flip over and die . . . and any accidents the those driver had could cause sequential accidents to other drivers.
Or some person (probably old) could just DIE, for no real reason except it was his or her time to go. :-/

Besides, many people break the laws.

There are guys who eat horribly unhealthily and live well into their 80's or 90's.
Yes, people should try to take care of themselves, but no one can prolong their life beyond the time God has planned for them.

This is a tough one. Do you practice a faith?(religion?)(belief system?) Because if you don't, in my humble mind, you can't know where she is coming from. Some have a 'religious zeal' out of fear. Some say they have experienced something outside of themselves that is all powerful (in their eyes and heart). Without that insight, either into her mind or yours, it is hard to answer your very logical and concrete question. Because it goes outside of or defies logic doesn't it? The old adage (question) "Why do bad things happen to good people?" Some people must have a safe way to get out of worrying about the bad in life. They cannot cope. Now, reaching out, in fear and worry brought me to Jesus. But, it brought my boyfriend to Buddha. Is there really a way to "prove" who is right? Is there predestination or not? Eternal questions my friend. Peace.

The lady is incorrect. Life and death are in the power of the tongue and how you eat, drink, and think all have an influence on your lifespan. Of course God knows what the end result of everything will be but that does take away our choices.

It depends on whether you believe in fate or not...

no one will ever know the answer for sure, so its pointless to argue about. If you dont feel the same way, just smile and let it go.

No one really knows for sure. Many believe that is the case, although the plan can be altered in different ways.

Because she's wrong. She's got a belief she's probably had all her life. She's not going to let logic or facts invalidate that.
