It goes back to the days when religion was a governmental structure. A good way to control the population was to make sure they all followed the official church of the state. The best way they thought to do that is to make sure that everyone knew that if you where of the "wrong faith" you would suffer consequences if not in this life, then definitely in the world to come. Religions that claim to be the "only path" also create a feeling of community and exclusivity. This also entices members to recruit loved ones into the religion in order to "save their souls". To a crass person it could be looked at as a form of religious marketing, but on the most base level, I think people like to be right, especially about something as personal as religion. The ability to "know" that you are of the "right faith" can give a human large amounts of comfort in trying times. So it is for the religion to gain power, the followers to feel better, and possible recruits more susceptible. Thusforth proof has nothing to do with it. Also the ability to accept things without proof frees the mind from trying to figure out everything and just focus on that which an individual finds truely spiritually rewarding. A leap of faith is more about the jump than the landing.

exclusive power hungry people....
Faith is not religion.
Religion is mankind trying to have control.,Of Faith, and the way we worship...
Religion is an old idea..older than the idea of common education...thus the elites took over an ideal concerning the worship of God and created a power base to manipulate the masses of the ignorant and uneducated...
And it worked for 1800 years.
Don't be someone who can't separate the two. Faith is a personal possession.

jdm... I couldn't help but think of The Matrix while reading your answer.
I have faith that my choice in religion will lead me to the right destination. BUT I am not about to say it is the only way... I see it like this. There are roads coming from all directions to get into a city... Not just one.

Faith proves to self and not to other person unless he has also equal faith in God. Faith is ones own conviction. When some one sees a person with faith gains, he joins that company and it becomes a religion.

well.its just their belief....for me..religion is not the only way to heaven or its not really the way to heaven.....its not a matter of religion...and religion is not really based on faith because faith has a deeper meaning than what we know... money can buy religion but not faith as they say...but you shold rspect their belief if you want them to respect yours,too...besides we don't really know the truth..right??? at least they have a so-called belief...

Because it would sound silly if they said that the only way to heaven was through some other religion. Not that what they say isn't just as silly, just less obvious.

You should analyze the teachings, rules, principles, logic and stories of those religions and be intellectually honest with yourself on which one is righteous, loving and true. Many religions contradict themselves and put man as the enforcer of those rules and governor of rights. Ultimately, man cannot be the judge because he is bias out of ignorance and cannot grant rights because he has no authority over another man.

Precisely, since it can't be proven OTHERWISE, then they must be right, according to each one. It's crazy!
