N.A.S.A. is talking about going back to the moon again around 2022 to establish a base. Why do we need to do this?

Science. The advancements in astrophysics and engineering make it worthwhile in my opinion. But it could also provide useful information about possibly terraforming Mars, or maybe Venus. If we don't destroy ourselves, we will need to leave Earth to advance much farther.

There are probably more. Probably some political ones.

I think the idea of going to establish a station on the moon is a good idea because that's the key to explore space. The earths population is only getting larger and earth would not be able to provide for the human population much longer (if all people on earth lived like Americans it would take 11 earths to supply the demand). Space is the answer as was America to Europeans during colonial period however we don't have the technology to go deep into space (i mean humans not probes). By establishing a base on the moon scientists would make new inventions because of all the research needed for the completion of the mission.
The only thing I disagree with is why should NASA do this alone. NASA should combine efforts with other space programs and make it an international effort. This should not be a race for the country as were the first missions to the moon but a race for the human race.

I think that's great idea to build a base first step toward human existence on the moon. letter we can build houses hotels shops basically build a city there but it's going to happen only 200 years from now. Still kind of cool if you think about it. I would rather to live on a moon then in this $hit hole which we call EARTH.

So we have a good outpost to do reasearch, get AWSOME pictures of the outer reaches of the universe with powerful telescopes (you don't get light pollution on the moon) and so when we fill up the earth there is a pre-prepared base just ready to be inhabited.

The economic answer to that is, for resources. If we can get out into the solar system before we run out of enough spare resources on earth to do so, we can find more resources off-planet to keep our technological society going for a much, much longer time.
The Science answer to that is, to find out more about the rest of the solar system. Even if you are not looking for anything in particular, finding our more about the universe both nearby and far away usually generates some useful science, eventually. And just finding out is neat, too.
The political answer is, so that NASA can keep up their momentum in public awareness and interest. Folks are getting blase about the shuttles, and we are not learning anything big or new with those.
'nuf answer?

Yes it's for science, exploration, and proof to the new melenium that we can make it to the moon. I'm so sick of all the conspiracy idiots thinking that we never went. Also spacecraft technology in NASA has gotten allot better so it would be ALOT easier and cheaper to get there these days.

The same reason Columbus went back to America.

well it would be a good tourist attraction?
and it could be a decent military base...untouchable by almost everything and yet it can launch missles anywhere it wants?
also it starts our voyage of space and colonizing other planets and eventually humans can live in space
