That would be Captain Smith, a celebrated and much-loved veteran of several White Star liners, who came out of retirement to captain the Titanic on her maiden (and last) voyage.

Titanic
There were about 1,320 passengers on the Titanic. Many of which were immigrants from England, France and Ireland looking for a better life in America. The Titanic was an innovation that broadened the horizon to the wealthy and the poor. The loss of life struck everyone with desolation and left many heavy-hearted.
In Belfast, Ireland during 1910, there were 14,000 workers hired to build a ship for the White Star Line named the Titanic. In fact, “The Titanic was designed by William James, an Irish nobleman. James was an excellent engineer who had designed many ships. He took great pride in building a vessel he believed would almost be unsinkable--but he made one mistake”. This means that James did not think it was necessary to build the bulkheads so high. The owners of the ship agreed and used the extra space to build first class rooms. They did not take enough safety measures and instead made more rooms for the pleasures of first class passengers.
The passengers ranged from wealthy to poor. For example, “First class, with 337 people on board, was about half full. Only 271 passengers bought second class tickets, less than half those available. But third class with 712 passengers was nearly full. Most of the travelers were immigrants with large families”(Wormser 12).
This shows that the passengers were of various ethnicity and class. For example, English, Irish, Middle Eastern, French, Chinese, Indian, German and Finnish. Thus, the first class passengers were saved first because they were considered more important due to their wealth. For this reason, the third class passengers died first because they were considered less important due to their poor economic status.
The Carpathia came too late to save the passengers and crew. For example, “By 2:05 a.m. the last life boat had departed the Titanic. The Carpathia, steaming to rescue was now three hours away. But the Titanic with almost 1,500 people still on board, had only 15 minutes left” (Wormser 34 ) This means that the Titanic’s passengers and crew died from the icy North Atlantic because they drowned or suffered from hypothermia.
Additionally, the passengers could have been saved by the Californian because it was only 30 minutes away. The captain of the Californian sent a light Morse code to the Titanic after seeing the flare. Unfortunately, the crew of the Titanic could not see it, so they never replied. Consequently, the captain of the Californian went back to sleep.
The great innovation, the Titanic, shed light to many individuals from simple immigrants to wealthy noblemen. The loss of life suffered on the Titanic was vast and devastating to all. The Titanic, a novelty of its’ time, had the population in awe. With the sinking of the Titanic, the whole world cried and shared in the suffering of the individuals who were affected by this tragedy. Ideas came pouring in from many to raise the Titanic. Most however, were unpractical until 1985 when the Titanic was finally discovered by Robert Ballard and his crew.
