I have heard it said and it seems to be true that love is an act more than an emotion. If this is true then you can love even those you despise with an act of good will. Do you think this is true and advisable?

This for ccSteve: Steve, that is what happens in war; war is resolved by, "the one who hates more intensly and efficiently wins!" You have to hate in order to efficiently kill!

I think that hate is such a strong thing, it has to come from somewhere very personal. That person much have violated you or your family in a horrible way for you to hate them.
So if you can take that and turn it into love, would give you rest.
It would take away the hate eating you up inside.
I think it takes a very strong person to do that.
Personally, at this point, I hope I never forgive and that emotion stays raw in me so I don't get hurt again.
But that's just me.
Good question, though!

It depends. If it is something personal or irrational, then I think a person would need to ask themselves whether the fact that someone is an "enemy" implies a difficiency in their own character. On the other hand, if it is something on the level of nations and life and limb are in jeopardy, I think it is foolish at best and asking for your own demise.

Yes.

This is Biblical advise. Christ said to love you enemies.

It is wise and healthy to show love and respect your enemies and those who hate you. You can be kind without being a doormat. It doesn't mean you have to hang out with them or be stupid. But it does mean, that, as much as it is up to you, you can show them love, respect, and be at peace with them.

The contrast between their attitude and actions and yours will be huge and it is possible that this in itself will be a wake up call.

You can always control your own actions and reactions. You cannot control others.

All the best to you.

Hate doesn't do much for you - so don't... Have you ever heard of disagreements resolved because the parties hated each other more intensely?

And everyone knows that all you need is love...-)

While I dislike some types of people, and a few individuals specifically, I "hate" no one. Most "hate" is just fear that we project on others, because it is easier than asking ourselves what is REALLY the problem. Besides, what positive has ever come of hatred?

Yes, because man is not fare but God is and His son said it is wise to love your enemies.
(Isa 55:9) For [as] the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.
(Isa 55:8) For my thoughts [are] not your thoughts, neither [are] your ways my ways, saith the LORD.
(Pro 16:7) When a man's ways please the LORD, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him.

(Mat 5:44) But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
(Luk 6:27) But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you,
(Luk 6:35) But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and [to] the evil.
This was said by the3 Son of God whom knows better than he.

Yes. Even loving your enemy with a "heavy hand" is advisable as long as you know that it is true and righteous.

there is a freedom in forgiving and loving one's enemy. that doesn't mean we have to have the enemy over for supper anytime soon, but the act of us accepting others for who they are and loosing our fear of them, and allowing ourselves to love them will set us free. this doesn't mean i will cross paths with an enemy whom i love and expect to be loved back, i may be wise to love my enemy from afar....
