Cost varies based on make, model, used or new, quality, etc...
It is legal to own an gun in the US if it is purchased legally. It is legal to store it in your home. It is advisable to keep in locked up or to use a child safety lock to protect those who migh stumble upon it and to protect yourself from liability.
You can take gun safety courses through a lot of gun shops, clubs, and shooting ranges. You will likely have to pay for the course but it is well worth the investment. You can also take classes that will qualify you to apply for a CCW or Concealed Carry Weapons permit. The laws and issuing of these vary widely from area to area and they may or may not be issued where you live.
Laws and regulations covering guns, which ones you can own, how you are required to transport them, etc... vary from state to state, county to county, and city to city. Check with a local gun shop or club for local details.
Be safe.

It really all depends on where you live when you refer to gun laws the NRA produces a comprehensive guide with state by state laws
http://www.nraila.org/GunLaws/
As long as you are over the age of 18 ( for shotguns and rifles) and over the age of 21 ( for handguns) and have no criminal convictions or mental problems and can pass a quick background check you should be able to legally own a gun.
The price of owning a gun varies based on the type and training you require. But if you were a beginner I would reccomend at least 300.00 for a reliable beginning defense hand gun with allowances made for matinence, ammunition, and training. Also you may want to budget about 250 dollars if you live in a concealed carry area and wish to get a permit

The laws in every state are different.
Generally, you need to be 18 to purchase a rifle or shotgun and 21 to purchase a handgun. If you have been convicted of a felony or domestic violence, you have been stripped of your civil rights.
Home protection is certainly a valid reason to own a firearm. It is legal in most locations except places like New York City and Washington, D.C., where only politicians and other criminals are allowed to own them.
As to cost, you get pretty much what you pay for. And as for a gun safety, that varies from state to state.
The more guns in private hands, the safer we all are.

The cost will vary depending on the type of gun you purchase.
It should be legal to possess it in your home.
Practicing gun safety is free! Learning it will cost you something. Around $100.00 for a basic course.
Research your States laws for the most accurate answer.

first, depends on what gun you buy if someone gives you a gun then its free (but you still need to buy bullets) most places allow you to have a gun in your own home, if your town laws state that you can't then you should move cause a criminal can have a gun if its leagal or not they dont care so if your town dont allow it please move to a safer place. gun safty corses are about 100 bucks and its like a 8 hour class. some states require you to take the class before you can get your f.o.i.d. card (that you need to leagally buy a gun) check your state website for the laws on guns, in texas you can have them and just about everyone does but in illinois you have to carry it in the trunk of your car yada yada yada, goodluck. its not just everyones right to own a gun, its your responsability.

1. depends on what gun you buy
2. no, you won't get in trouble if it's properly licensed
3. do you mean the actual physical safety on the gun? If so, than no, you have to buy a safety. If you're talking about gun safety courses, you also have to pay for those.
4. it depends on your state. Most prohibit conceal and carry, and of course you can't just shoot anyone you want whenever even though your gun may be licensed.

Get training first, start shopping around, check your state gun laws and laws on what constitutes self-defense. You can't go wrong doing these things.
