Why not?

It exposes them to a different time and culture. It is also written from a kids point of view, which is ideal for younger readers.

Plus, It is an alltime great piece of literature. The characters are exceedingly well developed, and it is full of moral values.

I had to read it in high school, and surprise surprise, english 102 in college!
Its a sin not to read a Mockingbird.....LOL

My reason probably isn't the best, but I couldn't stand that book when I read it in high school. I was also an English major in college and I generally love literature. I even tried to read it again and disliked it.

I know it is on the banned book list for, I think, racial discrimination.

However, I couldn't tell you if I think it should be taught or not for a good reason. I wouldn't teach it, because it bores me and, when I was 14, I felt like the characters were very immature. I could figure out the whole plot after the first chapter or so.

I would add Lord of the Flies, Phantom of the Opera, Black Beauty, A Little Princess, The Count of Monte Cristo, White Fang, and The Time Machine. When you finish Dracula I would read The Complete Sherlock Holmes or Wuthering Heights. Go you for starting to read again!

When I was in year 7, we had to analyse parts of the book. Though I must admit it wasn't all that exciting but it would be a great book for high school students. It helps kids of today understand the themes, conflicts and problems that are in the world today.

Yes. Because there is a very good lesson in morals there. Being fair, being kind to those less fortunate, or less than, and accepting others no matter who they are, physically, or monetarily. It teaches a way of life that needs to be remembered and used today. High school is a great place for this, because, they will soon be out there and will make choices that my alter the rest of their lives.

Yes, it is a classic of American literature and shows racism in the old south so kids of any race can understand it's destructiveness and cruelty. Kids today do not understand what the black race endured in the south. Let them learn from this great American novel.

No. I think it is a wonderful book, but I think it is a little juvenile for high schoolers. I read it in middle school, then switched districts and had to read it again in high school. By the time I read it in high school, I felt that my emotional and intellectual capabilities had surpassed the content of that book. It's not "shocking" anymore.

So, it should be read by students, but not high school students. 7th or 8th grade is best.

Absolutely. I read it in 8th Grade with my English class. I think it is important for teenagers to reflect and learn how bad things were back then with racial inequality so that they can use that information in real life. The book is a classic, and in my opinion everyone should read it.
