I am in Long Island, NY. Moved, gave forwarding address but the post ofice has left a lot of my mail at the old address, now my disability check went missing, but I found out that my neighbor had it, and then cashed it for herself. She told me she would retunr the cash to me, but has not done so. She also has some of my things she's holding, soI want ot get them out of her apartment.Didn't want to press charges, but I need my money. She forged my signature. She was told to give the envelope to my sister to take to my bank, but she opened it and cashed the check. Some friend, I trusted her implicitly. Now, I'm going to have my utilies shut off because I can't pay since she stole my money. What advice do you have for me?Hate to have her arrested, that won't get my money back, and that's what I want. She will not answer my phone calls. If I can go back there myself, should I go alone, or bring a police officer to collect my belongings, if she's even there?should I confront her in person?

She stole from you, and you don't want to press charges?? Why not, she is a thief, guilty of a lot of legal offenses, theft, mail tampering, fraud. Defiantly take a police officer with you to collect your belongings. If you do not want to press charges, at least take her to small claims court, they will insure you get your money back.

I don't believe the post office can refuse to deliver mail to a registered address unless there's an issue of safety. I think you should try going up the ladder, call the central office. Or...you could go down the ladder. Talk the the mailman and explain the problem. Assuming we're talking about walking across the street, if you're nice to the fellow he may consent to the delivery regardless. Otherwise, you'll have to do pick-up at the local post office. I had to do that for some time in a new development until the post office worked out delivery to the new area.

You go immediately to the office responsible for handling and sending you your check ,,,, Let them know that the signature on that check is wrong or forged or what ever so they can stop payment on it if it's not too late already but also give them the name of the party that did this and let them handle it from there ,,,,I'm afraid that she is already in trouble if she did in fact forge your name and cashed it ,,,,, I'm sure that once this has been investigated you will receive your annuity,,,, To avoid this happenning again make sure that they have your correct address ,,,,Anything you do towards getting your other belongings from her should be handled through the police such as being accompanied but a policeman or some other legal representative ,,,, Good luck with this ,,,, I think it's going to be a rough one for you ,,,, At any rate this woman has already cooked her goose ,,,, and there's nothing you can do about it ,,,, What happens to her now is up to the judicial system ,,,,

You really need to take charge and press charges. Contact the USPS Postal Inspectors via the link at the very bottom of the page at USPS.com. You also need to notify everyone that you have moved. Don't blame the Postal Service, because on every single piece of your forwarded mail it told you to notify senders of your new address. Go back and get your stuff, but bring along a large son/friend and/or a cop. You owe your good for nothing friend nothing. Let her explain her actions to a judge.

Go IMMEDIATELY to the Social Security Office and tell them what happened. They should help you with replacing the check and tell you how to file charges against this woman or they, themselves, may be able to get the money back. Either way, Social Security NEEDS to know what has happened and needs to know your new address, as well, so this will not happen, again, next month.

What a horrible thing to happen. First, let her know firmly that you will call the police if she doesn't return your money. If she doesn't return it then call the authorities. This is seriously a crime. She not only stole your money but she forged your signature and opened your mail -- both illegal.

You need to report her. That is a Federal offense and if they find out that you knew something and you didn't say anything you could be charged a fine. In your packet says that only you can cash your check.

You need to report her to the police for stealing and forgery of your check and also to the post office for opening your letter, opening a letter not addressed to you is a very bad. she has committed a Federal offense.

You have no course but legal action. Small claims court should do it.
