Cedar shake roofs shouldn't be more expensive to install, they are comparable in installation time. But they are certainly more expensive to buy. I have installed both. A home with a shake roof has more street appeal and ups the value of the home. Get a second opinion, the shingles should be cheaper. but the labour costs may be slightly (SLIGHTLY) higher. If you are worried about fire, duroid(shingles) burn too. Shake roofs are not banned in Canada, I just finished the exterior on a $4 million dollar house. ALL luxury homes built here have either tile or shake roofing.

Who's telling you what?
I'm an x-roofer and I do know that it takes 9 bundles of shakes to cover a square of roofing. The same square of roofing requires 3 bundles of ashphalt shingles. In otherwords, shakes are 3 times as expensive as shingles. FACT!
The roofer that you speak of may be trying to schmooze you.
If your going for some kind of "look" and it is in your budget, then go with cedar. A lot depends on your roof pitch as well. Shakes should only be applied on a steep pitch roof.
Best bet is get a 2nd opinion from a reputable roofer.
Cedar shakes will last at least 40 years when applied properly on a steep roof.

I have a home and several buildings with metal roofs installed over the previous roofs. However none were cedar shakes. The only reason I can think of to remove the cedar is if it is necessary to reach the solid material underneath the shakes in order to hold the metal in place. If screws are used to attach the metal, just make sure that they are long enough to reach the plywood or whatever underneath. I strongly recommend using screws. They are pretty much standard now but some builders still use nails to save expense. On edit, I mis-read the question as I thought the shakes would be left on.

I don't have an answer as to the expense of installing a cedar shake roof vs shingles bit I have heard that insurance company's will not insure some houses or the insurance will be considerably higher due to the fact of the increased fire hazard. Check with your insurance company. I do think the cedar shakes are a lot more attractive.

let me guess, the contractor has already given you a price for the shakes. He wants the same money to do the easier job with regular shingles. regular shingles will last about 5 times longer.
Get a couple more estimates-just for shingles. If your home is likely to get ice dams. Talk to the contractor about a better grade tarpaper

More labor in the shakes but the price is about even, more durability and life with the shingles especially in Wa with the rain and moss growth,

TX HERE. TAKE HIM UP ON IT IF THAT IS SWHAT U WANT. OF COURSE THEY COME FROM CANADA WHICH IS CLOSE TO U. FOR US HERE A SQUARE OF CEDAR HAND SPLIT IS ABOUT $250 PER FOR MATERIAL AND ABOUT $60 PER TO INSTALL. OF COURSE AGAIN AREA BAN THEM BECAUSE OF THE FIRE HAZARD AND THE COST OF THEIR INSURANCE RATES
