My husband and I have 3 children, ages 4, 5 and 6 (all males) and we are desperately trying to save some money for the next year or so we are hoping to downgrade to a 2 bedroom townhome. I wondered how to find out if that was legal because I heard it wasn't.

You would have to check state and local laws to find out, since it varies from state to state. I have heard of families being able to do that.

I think three kids can share one room until they are 12 years-old, then they would want their own rooms. And that is when you should consider getting a bigger house. If you can't, well, seeing that they're all males, you could possibly still have all three in one bedroom. I guess you would have to figure out what they would rather have when the time comes. However there is the possiblility that you would have to sleep in the living room in order to have your kids live a somewhat comfortable lifestyle.

I've had 5-6 people living in my 2 bedroom apartment before (4 rooms total). It was really stressful but we were rarely all home at the same time. We had two people per bedroom and one or two people sleeping on the pull out sofa in the living room. We lived like that for about 4 months. After which we cut it down to 4 people which was a lot easier. The only good thing about it was that rent and bills were much cheaper for everyone. I don't have the patience to do that again though. (It was against out lease but nobody could ever prove who actually lived there)

I'm pretty sure the limit for a 2 bedroom is 4 people unless some are children then i think that 5 might be okay.

Its not pushing the occupancy limit at all. My family lived in a 2 bedroom home and we were 5 people also.

In California, when I was in Real Estate is was, yes, 1 person for every 100 square feet of living space. So if your in a 800 square foot home with 2 bedrooms, you can actually have legally 7 people living there if you don't count the kitchen. That is what it was just 13 years ago. Things may have changed.

Depends on the ages and sexes of the people. If there's mom and dad and three kids, a child under 2 can be in the room with the parents and the other two children (of the same sex) can be in the second room.

It depends on where you live. In poorer parts of the world, it is quite OK and considered fortunate to have a roof over the head. No social restriction.
