Bellerophon I have seen Troy and it's absurd...It's not only tht Achilleas is presented as a bloodthirsty one...There also other facts tht are misleading like his death which I can't now remember how the movie presented it.......Ahhh!!!!! think he was trying to find Brisyida or Chrysyida and he got caught!!!!!!!Hahahaha!!!!!!Oh.men sht.....Are these wht I've been taught all these years at school trying hard to pass my exams? So tht they can take them some "movie-makers" and *****them? As a fact I didn't know tht Alexander was presented in the movie as a kid with psychological problems...I only knew tht he's being presented a fag....Yes,I will try and post it to an other field of the forum...And as for Nia Vardalos...She presents greeks being fat as she is(she would like to be as her thin schoolmates) and after rejecting her parents match-makings she falls into the arms of a beutiful american...Tht is the luck of those rejecting their family(culture).

Actually some Greek-American families fall within this stereotype.
However it is not the rule and it has nothing to do with the reality in Greece. It is a bad comedy which I don't think has a great impact on the view of people about Greeks and Greece. I would certainly not recommend it.

What I find truly disturbing is the distortion of history in movies like "Troy" and "Alexander the Great". I find it very offensive when the noble, proud king Achilles is presented as a bloodthirsty, vain and blasphemous mercenary, or when Alexander the Great is presented as a psychotic man who started an expedition against the Persians just because of his issues with his parents and his troubled childhood.

Anyone who likes Greek cooking a lot is going to have a problem staying thin. Come on the Greeks have great food. And yes the movie may have stereotypes but its just a movie and in no way denigrates Greeks. If you disagree, write your own script and do what Nia Vardarlos did, including getting on Oprah.

Chill out - I doubt very much whether the intention was to insult the Greeks, just to make a funny movie and earn loads of cash.

The US film industry doesn't have a very good reputation for being historically accurate or sympathetic to any other nationalities than American - so I wouldn't take it to heart.

According to them the USA single-handedly won WW1 and WW2 (never mind all the European and Anzacs soldiers that were involved); John Wayne cleared the Pacific of all the Japanese with one rifle and a hand grenade; and so on.

You are totally right. It is not very charming for us....BUT....I've lived with a Greek family in NY and to tell you the truth they were something like that!!Really!!They always want their children to marry Greeks-Americans and they do have that "proksenio" we have in Greece...Well she burried most of us but she showed what happens outside greek borders where greeks try to keep their orgin alive...with their way always!!

I am Serbian who knows a little bit Greek language and in general I know some things about Greek history, art, philosophy, music, etc. Plus I like Greek people, I think they are very nice and friendly. I am surprised with the way you see this movie, because I think that although it is full of stereotypes, its still funny and nice. It is just a comedy, and I think that when non-greek see this movie, they don't get wrong impression about Greeks - on the contrary. Maybe I am wrong and I dont understand it good, but this is my opinion.
