I wouldn't get anything large because you haven't been friends with them very long. Baked goods usually go over well. Or something small like a new book, gift certificate to the movies, Netflix subscription, a gift certificate to his or her favorite place to eat/shop, a small gift basket with bath stuff, coffee, chocolate, or anything that that person enjoys, etc. Gift certificates are great gifts to give people that you haven't been friends with for long. I wouldn't spend over $20 on anyone and wouldn't expect him or her to do so either.

Home made cookies or treats in hand decorated tins ... or some handmade ornament's ... you can get kits a craft store.
You could also buy a nice set of ornaments all the same color/ style and add little crafty touch to each them.Make each one a little unique. Write a sweet little card to go with each ornament telling each new friend what they mean to you . You could do this every year soon your friends will come to expect "this years ornament's "

I bought a kit at Michaels (craft store) that made dragonfly ornaments out of bead and wire. It was good b/c they weren't specifically for Christmas, but you could put them on the tree or in a widow during the year.
You could do a photo collage in a frame, but don't wreck your photos--make color copies that you can make yourself at Staples or Kinko's.

Homemade cookies are always appreciated. If your friends are natuire nuts, you can make simple bird feeders by coating pine cones with peanut butter and rolling them in bird seed. Also , you can buy paraffin and wicks and make your own candles. If you want colored candles, just throw in a crayon of the color you want while the wax is melting.
