I suggest you come over and see them personally. I can get you around some places here. I agree with the suggestion to give the support directly to the identified recipients instead of going through some organizations where admin costs will take more of your support than the intended purpose. Your $100 may be able to support 5 or more schoolchildren a year...

Mona - who says N Ordog comes from the US? Kind of arrogant just to assume everyone here is American.

A lot of charities really eat up a lot of the donations in admin costs. I currently live in the Philippines and "sponsor" some school activities and a few people in need. I am actually going to Marinduque this weekend where my friend's village got destroyed by Durian. I prefer the direct donation method, then I know that help is being received.

If you have a chance to visit the country, the best is to do something like find a school in an area where you would like to help someone and donate money straight to the school or pay a child's school fees or something like that. I don't know if you could take a tax deduction on it, but that's not what it is about anyway.

Like other answerers , I am also sponsoring a child...

As you sponsor a child, it is not because they are poor..there are many reasons why..... and your intention no matter what the reason is the most important..

..by sponsoring a child, it would give her food, education, medicine, and get closer to the Lord,, as the time she would take for helping her families could take her time away from school and the Lord, and if she gets enough help, time would not be taken and she can continue going to school and get provided..it is not much to give but a little help means a lot to them..

there are many programs of sponsoring poor children around the world..one of them like Alison mentioned is the world global mission... and some Christian organizations and other non profit organizations to consider..
You can choose the child you want to sponsor, they would send you informations and if this child has been sponsored by you..they would not put the picture of her/him so that you know there would be one sponsor and you can quit anytime so they can find a new one. the child could get intouched with you by receiving letters, etc. depends on the system.. so check the website.

So, whatever your intention is,it would benefit not only the child but also you, as when we started sponsoring a child, every joy and excitement of this kid of telling us how grateful she is for this blessings. we just keep on hoping that she would graduate and we are still here to keep her and if she could finish her education, someday this girl could help other someone in her community and we can continue sponsoring another child..
Helpful website are listed by answerers,, I don't know which country you are from.. as they have sponsoring programs in every countries to guide you..
GOD BLESS YOU...

I'm a member of Rotary International, living in the Philippines. Our group have 3 main projects - hospital for the poor, street children and an orphange. Any assistance with any of the projects would be most appreciated. I also am trying to set up a centre for hard of hearing / deaf, and seeking hearing aids, batteries and an audiometer. It would be also p[ossible to sponsor one of the children in the boy's orphanage.

You can send your money to me, I will be moving to the philippines and we are a poor family with poor children

hahaha

Seriously.................. You should find a way to send your money directly to a family or child with out going through an agency, that way they will get the full benifit of what you send. If you send your money to a charity or agency, chances are the money will never get to where you intended.
I know of countless families in the philippines that I could put you in contact with and could use the help but we are strangers you and I and it wouldnt be right for me to get involved unless we knew each other on a personal level.
I could however give you the contact info for a priest in the philippines who could probably put you in contact with a needy family if you want

Make sure you get one that doesn't take up to 90% of your money in administration costs, there are a lot of so called charities out there making big money for their executives. Fully investigate and get them to give you a breakdown of their costs etc first before committing. Some charities even sponsor the same child more than once so beware.
