We have a printer hooked up to a computer with a USB extension cable. We are having problems trying to attach other USB devices when this cable is in use (it works fine if we connect the printer without the cable.)

Is there something we can do? How about an extension hub (vs. just a cable?)

A hub should help, particularly a powered hub. Best solution would be to move the printer closer.

Printers are touchy things with the bi-directional connection to your PC. That is why a printer cable is usually about 6 feet long and no longer.

Most likely the problem you are realizing it not the USB cable itself but the fact that there are communication problems with the printer resulting from its length.

I would move the printer closer to the PC and remove the "extension" cable from it.

Hope this helps.

It may just be that the cable is cheaply made. If something isn't wired properly in the cable, a signal will get lost and/or rerouted which will cause your computer to get locked up waiting for a response from the printer saying that it received the information.

There shouldn't be any problems with it. Make sure though that you do not use the FRONT USB and only the BACK ones. Also the quality of the USB extension cable must be decent and not cheap looking....

Good luck

Never had any problems with any of my USB's. Have 8USB cords all connected and Switch is ON

get a usb hub and run everything from that. Generally when usb cables get around 10ft or more, they begin demostrating unusual symptoms.
