In October of 1983, the founder of the Bears, George S. Hallas died. That year they wore a football with "GSH" on their left chest. The next year, 1984, they moved it to the left sleeve and made it perminant. They've worn it ever since.

The Bears added the initials GSH to the left sleeve of their jerseys in 1984 in honor of the late founder/owner/player/head coach 'Papa Bear' George S. Halas who died on October 31, 1983.
