The President makes $400,000 a year and the vice president makes $186,300. Keep in mind, however, that all the president's expenses are paid; he's given a house which comes along with a chef, his transportation is taken care of, etc.
I remember when New York first instituted its Tax-Free week, the then New York City mayor, Rudy Guliani, wanted to commemorate the event by purchasing something. He got out of his car, went into some store, and picked up a pair of socks. Unfortunately, he didn't have enough money on him to buy it. It was the most ridiculous thing ever because it's just how it is--why would he need to carry money around when everything he needs is paid for? Bloomberg, the mayor now, rides the subway to work though and he's a bajillionaire, so who knows?

The President's monetary compensation is minuscule in comparison to the CEOs of most Fortune 500 companies and comparable to that of certain kinds of professionals e.g. attorneys and physicians in some parts of the United States. This is from wikipedia.
From the same , it is seen that $400.000/- is the annual income in 2001. (Should be 480,000 by now.)
Many of the presidents have not taken the salary and donated to charity like JFK and George Washington(salary of 25000$).
