Struts are a structural part of the suspension, either maintaining suspension angles and/or supporting the spring. Shocks are not structural. Basically, you could remove shocks, and still drive the car. Not the case with a strut. Not all struts contain the spring. Mustangs and Camaros (both previous body styles) used springs captured by the lower control arm with struts replacing the upper control arms. Honda uses struts that contain the spring, but do not maintain suspension angles.

Everyone refers to struts as the rear absorbers.
But for the difference i really don't know except the price between the struts and shocks. shocks which go up front are usually more expensive.

struts have coil springs fit around them; usually they come as one set.
Shocks are physically separate from springs.
