could you still collect prize money from a tournament even if you're dead last or at least made it to the quarterfinals?

At the big tournaments, like the US Open, players get paid if the make the main draw, even if losing in the first round.
waterbottle0909 is right about being in the top 200. I know several players on the satellite tour (generally ranked above 100), and if they don't win a few rounds, they end up losing money on the event after travel expenses.

It depends on the tournament. Most small tournaments offer little in the way of prize-money, so a player would have to get to the latter stages to make any real money. On the Pro-Tours (ATP and WTA), however, that is certainly not the case. Even the smallest tour-level events offer generous prize money. At the Majors (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and U.S Open) players can earn in excess of $15000 for losing in the first round. Not bad for about two hours' work.

No, you do not have to win the tournament to collect prize money. If you lose in the first round you still collect a small amount of money. As you go on to the 2nd round the prize money you get goes up. Every round you advance the more prize money you get.
