The concept of MAD was a viable deterrent in those days, unfortunately, only western style societies seem to feel they have a lot to use by employing nuclear weapons. The thing that really worries me is that the radical Islamic faction is not only ready to die, but eager to in carrying out their holy task. If these people happen to get their hands on a few suitcase nukes, all bets are off. I don't know about anyone else, but this is a very good reason to make sure we have a strong, capable appearing presence in the ME. You bring up a very interesting comparison and one that ought to be on the mind of every western society citizen.

They lack the capabilities to. Most countries, N. Korea is an example, either don't know about MAD or don't care about it. You're forgetting that both the US and the Soviet Union at that time owned more than enough nukes for every individual in their respective countries, plus the weapons were still relatively new and considered x-factors.

I would have to say the risk it would take to hold nuclear weapons in certain collapsed areas. Out of world countries in Iran and Kuwait have mountains where they build these huge factories for storing these sort of weapon. In the nations now, that's very hard so I hope this answers your question.

A rogue nation such as Iran or N.Korea would be promptly destroyed if they even gave it serious thought. Larger countries, such as the US, Russia, China, Great Britain, India, Pakistan, Israel, would suffer serious consequences if any were to use Nukes on these mentioned. Oh yeah, France, too!

What keeps them from attacking us is our nuclear weapons submarines, that are out in the ocean patroling the waters for our country.

The fact that the US still has nukes... MAD still works because *most* of those countries leaders don't want to die. The situation changes with Iran... They welcome death and destruction, for they believe that this will bring on the hidden or 12th Imam.

I think it's simply a matter of everyone knowing that everyone else has them, and if someone decides to use theirs, there will be someone else getting back at them with theirs...
I also find it a little ridiculous that our own PRESIDENT can't even pronounce the word.
