amd is pushing out the quad core (code name 4x4) and it is an interim solution to market with Intel. They are both 2 dual core on one chip. Intel is leading the market in this area (recently overtook AMD with the Duo Core 2).

AMD is leapfrogging Intel and will go to 8 core (presumably) and this 4 core is merely to say they made one. Intel has announced they are planning to have an 80 core cpu by 2010 in just 3-4 years.

AMD new 4 core cpu is due out this month for business line and high end gaming (FX series) and should fit existing AM2 motherboards with a new bios upgrade, however it is not worth getting as you are best off with an X2 or Duo Core 2 for the money. Save for the next REAL AMD release
"Future updates
Sometime during 2007, users should be able to use two, future quad-core AMD processors using the chipset, providing a total of eight physical cores, dubbed as "4x4+" and "4x4++" [10]. While backward compatable AMD quad-cores will also support an update to HyperTransport which will benefit more from a new chipset released at the same time.

The first guy was somewhat inaccurate in his description, which is surprising since he listed a source. However he basically just totally misquoted his source if you read it. Anyway, the 4x4 is a motherboard that has two physical sockets on it, thereby allowing you to put two dual core processors on it, and thereby you have a quad core set up. But the 4x4 board uses Socket F, not AM2, so you have to buy special processors to run on it. AMD will be releasing true quad core chips next summer with there next generation chips. When they come out, you will be able to put two of them on the 4x4 board, hence the eight core set up the first guy referenced.
