Microwaves are radiowaves in the 2.4Ghz range transmitting at high power. They are also used for cell phones at very low power. Getting too close to a high-power transmission can kill you (literally cook you like a microwave oven). That's why the transmitter has to be turned-off for a technician to work on it.
