Funny you should ask! Some day I'll look it up--but for now: I have a female friend, she's Chinese--& this matters I think--whose Italian boyfriend was TOO romanitc & getting on her nerves. She wouldn't answer his calls, bla bla bla. She phoned to tell me he'd left a single white rose for her, in the lobby of her apartment bldg. She was almost hysterical. I thought it was sweet! She asked didn't I know that white roses mean DEATH. No, & I still don't, & I hope someone can tell you where this myth originated
Edit: Looking at the answers so far, seems they mean different things to different people. That's why I mentioned Chinese & Italian--thinking perhaps it is an Asian thing. Where are all those people with the great links for information???
