The musical was set in Oklahoma and was about Oklahoma. Why would they call it anything else?

The musical that this film is based on was originally entitled "Away We Go!" The title was changed to "Oklahoma!" after the popularity of that song with the play's initial audiences.

I sincerely believe you are mistaken. Why would Rodgers and Hammerstein write a play, a musical at that, then try to fit in a state with the proper syllables to match the music?

Oh, and FYI, the musical is "Oklahoma!" with an exclamation pt.
