okay, perhaps i need to clarify...

yes, i know the drinking age in the u.s. is 21. i'm not asking if this would be possible (you could feasibly put them in bars where everyone's i.d. is checked before entering), i'm asking if there is a law prohibiting this.

Yes it's illegal. If it was legal every 10 year old would be running around wasted! There is no way to I.D. a person through vending machines. The legal age in the US is 21

Yeah. We can't even sell cigarettes in vending machines. I am positive that vending machines for cigarettes are illegal. I don't know if there is a specific law prohibiting a beer machine in a place where only legally drinking adults are or not--but I'd put money on yes, it is illegal. In the US, bartenders also have the responsibility to not serve people who are too intoxicated for safety, and a machine couldn't regulate that.

Honestly I am not sure. But placing such vending machine in public places...grocery stores, hotels, airports, etc. would be impractical. There would be no way to verify the person is of legal age.

I imagine if it is legal the only place you could place them would be in a bar...and why would the owner of a bar want the competition?

Well, you could add a scanner to the vending machines that would scan a drivers licence, then insert cash and select choice(s).

I don't know if they do it anymore, but the only place I have ever seen this, was in the early 80's on some military bases in the barracks. Those were the days......

Not exactly, but you have to keep it someplace that only allows people over 21 in, so more trouble than it's worth.
