i usually pick wood off the ground or saw it off the side of a tree for free. unfortunately, you live in california where wood doesnt grow on trees.(pardon the pun). im sure theres a woodworkers shop somewhere in california. theres a nationwide chain of them.

Hi:
I don't know in California - here in Kansas City, Missouri, there is a local store - Paxton's - that has specialty woods like purpleheart, burlwoods of different varieties, zebrawood, ebony, etc. There's a magazine called 'Wood Carving Illustrated' that you might check out, and also there is an online artist's community where membership is free at wetcanvas - there are currently more than 93,000 worldwide members. There is a sculpture forum that you might find help in locating what you're trying to find. Hope this helps!

Check out hardware stores. Maybe even a craft store but i don't know about that for sure. Here in Indiana you can just get that stuff everywhere. Bass not so much but pine is everywhere. People sell it in the winter on the street corner. But yeah check out your local hardware or home improvement store. if they don't have it they can definetly tell you where to get it.
happy carving. make me a flamingo.

Google this...look for either basswood or pinewood. Your closest source to your door will be cheapest due to cost of shipping. I love basswood to carve. Look up Basswood on Google and find a close source, then go there and buy it, or have it sent right to your door!

in case no one mentions it, make shure you use wood that is kilned...so it dont crack or split on ya later. i find that turning stock works the best for carving.
