Umm, thats a hard one, but I'd say let him know you're there for him and he can talk to you if he wants/needs to, but make sure he clearly knows its on a friendship basis?

I dont know what you mean with for his own good, but that should include when he's going through tough time right?
If you still hang in there with him, wouldn't it be bad for him ?(whatever reason that might be)
He will always going through tough time when you leave because you leave, but if that's what you think best (letting go), then just do it. Think hard before you decide that is what's best for both of you, and act on it. Good luck.

Do u like him to progress in his life? He may be seeking ur support. Ur question sounds like u like his progress and u thought because of ur company, he is loosing his progress.
