Is Ginormous A Word

2016-10-18 05:03:11 · answer #2 · answered by hathaway 4 · 0 0

I looked up ginormous and it is a word, albeit a relatively new one. It is a combination of gigantic and enormous, and was coined sometime between 1948-53. It is one of those words that creeps into the English language stealthily but as time passes is accepted, often by virtue of being included in dictionaries.
Never forget that just because a word is in some dictionary does not necessarily make it good English.
An example is the term "dis" for disrespect. Perhaps you can find it in a dictionary. It still sounds atrocious and exudes literary laziness.
If you tire of ginormous, try gargantuan which also means huge.

P.S. Actually, according to etymologist Eric Partridge, ginormous was used by British RAF and Naval officers in WWII before spreading to the rabble shortly thereafter.

Ginormous is a word in that it communicates a point to another person, which is technically what makes a word a word.

However, the reason your teacher told you it wasn't a word is because it isn't proper for formal writing. Since it is slang, it cannot be used in papers, reports, etc.

So, yes, the dictionary will have it listed as a word for the fact that it has a meaning. Your teacher probably just told you it was not a word, because it is not a proper, formal word for papers/reports.

yes
it's an adjective that came from a mixture of the words giant and enormous in the late 40s and early 50s
your teacher could be considering it as a slang word, which you're not supposed to use in reports, BUT it is in the dictionary

My Oxford dictionary lists it as a word. Your teacher is wrong. It is a colloquialism but it is definitely a word. Suggest you look it up and take the dictionary to show her.

It is a word, but it is a bad choice of words for a paper.

Try to use enormous, or gigantic, or any other word that could mean the same thing. :)
