1. DO NOT BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU HEAR FROM WIKIPEDIA - it's all information entered by the people who go to the site, and they get their rumors second, third, and twenty-fifth handed - IT'S NOT RELIABLE.

2. Avatar: The Last Airbender IS NOT ANIME. It was made by Nickleodeon right here in the USA, and NOT in Japan. I don't know why Scot Z was given so may thumbs down....

but Scot Z HAS THE RIGHT ANSWER.

Anime is the Japanese term that was borrowed from the English word "animation". Anime means animation and animation means anime; it's just a change of language. In the native toungue, anything animated to them is anime, from Mickey Mouse to Dragonball.

On the West side however, anime refers to Japanese animation only, so Avatar isn't really anime to many people because even with cultural referances, it's not made by the Japanese.

So whether or not you like to look at it as a whole or divide by origin, it depends on your opinion.

Due to linguistics, the anime definition is subject to interpretation. In Japan, the term does not specify an animation's nation of origin or style; it is used as a blanket term to refer to all forms of animation from around the world.[1] In English, main dictionary sources define anime as "a Japanese style of motion-picture animation" or "a style of animation developed in Japan".[2] Thus, non-Japanese works are sometimes called anime if they borrow stylistically from Japanese animation.
so you can assume it is an anime, but acutally not one originally....hehe, it depends on how you look at it, in my opinion, it is definately not one, well, simply because it boosts too little japanese animation as compared to 'real' japanese animes.(:

I don't see why it can't be. Despite the fact that it is technically considered "Amerime," I think the show's elements can be considered more anime than anything else.

No! It's a nickelodeon cartoon attempting to cash in on the popularity of all the anime shows that come from across the seas.
