Religious fanatics and conservatives have never believed in the founding principles of this nation. Marriage is a man-made institution. Marriage does not occur in nature. Homosexuality is genetic. Our genetics are "God's" will. To be anti-homosexual is to be anti-God. To be anti-gay marriage is to be anti-love. It's best, though, not to confuse Christians with too many facts.

First of all, let me begin by stating that I believe that same-sex marriages should not be outlawed. However, I will also try to explain why people argue against same sex marriages. You asked the question, so I am assuming that you are open to answers.
First of all, marriage has long been both a civil and religious word. To argue that it is only a religious idea and/or word is incorrect because non-Christians (or non-Muslims or non-Jews) get married all the time. The state has been using this word to designate a couple of people that make a commitment to one another for a long time. Should they have used a separate word? I wonder if this would've helped. Yet, the truth is that it is a commonly understood word outside of religion just as the word "murder" is understood from within and without any specific faith.
Moving on to your question--most people believe that society should control a level of civility that promotes a healthy group of people. For example, we outlaw murder because a majority of us believe that taking another person's life is wrong. We outlaw fraud in business because it undermines the health of our economy. We create laws in order to prevent chaos and promote a safe place for many people to exist.
It is at this point that I diverge from people who are against same sex marriage. People who want this to be illegal are arguing that, just like murder or fraud, a gay marriage undermines what society needs to operate successfully. They use the Bible or other sources to support their point that this contract between a same-sex couple will hurt society, but their specific intent is simply to protect society. Protecting society is not religious, but common sense.
The point in the road we have come to is not to argue whether it is a separation of church and state, but we need to convince people that same-sex couples will not harm society. The only way to do this is to show people that gay marriage will not harm society. The only way to show this is to have as many healthy, gay partnerships as possible around society. I am afraid society will have to change slowly, and this will slowly change people's perceptions. This will then change the law. Change, especially when it comes to sexually taboo issues, is always slow and painful.
Lastly, can I mention that the person slamming Christians should really be careful. We are not all the same. Some Christians are close-minded. So are some atheists I've met. Some Christians are wonderfully open-minded and kind people. So are atheists, Jews, Muslims, etc. Please keep your comments about diverse cultures appropriate.

the facts are staring right at you. the religions base their beleifs on the way they read their book (which ever one it is) and the Conservitives never believed in the separation of church and state to begin with. marriage can be done in a state, county, city courthouse with the justice of the peace, but since it has been outlawed (unconstitutionally) the USA has yet again found a way to make our citizens second class humans. "they're gay, so they aren't covered under the constitution."

The very institution of marriage is an ordinance of religious faith. Since most faiths are opposed to same sex relationships, why would gay people want to be "married", as you said, a church thing....?
