And can anything besides the clutch be damaged by driving with it? I have a 2003 Chevy S-10 with a 5 speed manual tranny. Apparently the throwout bearing is going bad causing some fun noises. I'm wondering how long I should expect to be able to drive with it and what am I risking by doing so?

First off thanks everyone. It's making a small chirping sound in neutral. Then intermittently between 2500 and 3k RPM in first and second gear it makes a hollow whining noise. It was a mechanic who diagnosed it. Cash flow wise I'm hoping it will get me about another 1500 miles of mild city driving. Any more thoughts? Thanks again.

Interesting. I think I will take it to a second mechanic for a diagnosis before I do anything else. Thanks again everyone.

Assuming that you have diagnosed the noise correctly as the release bearing, you can drive quite a while with one that is making "noise". Does it only make noise when the clutch is depressed? Does it "whirrr" or "growl"? If it growls loudly then you are not long for the living my friend. If it just whirrs and whines it is getting dry and may last and last. If it truly is the release bearing you are just wearing the bearing and until that time when you push the clutch and it separates making on hell of a noise you can drive it. Good Luck, Peace, Al

How long can a manual transmission run with a bad throwout bearing?

STOP! YOU MAY HAVE BEEN MISDIAGNOSED.
The throwout bearing is not engaged unless your foot is on the clutch. If you are driving down the road in first or second at 2500 to 3000 rpm whan you hear the noise, your noise is an internal bearing, not a throwout. If the noise is present with the trans in neutral and the clutch released, it's an input shaft bearing. You are better off getting a used trans and installing it. Internal manual trans repairs can be expensive.

The throwout bearing is a clutch component, not a part of the transmission and will not damage the transmission in any way.
Eventually the bearing will completely fail, probably freezing up at that point, and you won't be able to shift.
I'd get it fixed before it fails, unless you like being towed.

My Mustang's throwout and pilot bearing both were destroyed and i mean literally blown in 2/3 pieces but i managed to take it to the garage and flywheel was ok and put the whole new clutch kit in it.
Even with both bearings destroyed the clutch never slipped and the only way i could put it in gear was to shut the engine off put it in 1st or 2nd and turn it on and drive off lol.
I noticed stuff getting worse when the clutch pedal was getting stiffer and stiffer it was like driving a gym machine lol.
If your truck is whistling for underneath or if it's screeching then you should go ahead and change everything down there then you know that clutch, pressure plate, pilot and throwout bearings are new and ready for 100.000 miles again

I'm not sure about the GT-S, but I have replaced clutches in Celicas before, and I never had to pull the whole engine. As for how long you can drive it, it depends on your driving habits. If you take care of it, you might be able to get another 6 months or more out of it. Call a local shop for an estimate, but I would say it will run between 600-900 bucks.

My mustang has recently been giving off a high pitched noise when I press in the clutch. Then gets a bit louder as I begin to depress the clutch to drive the car forward. while cruising the sound goes away, but if I am stopped and have the clutch released in neutral the sound it makes like sort of like a grow. and I can feel it in the clutch petal. Should I replace everything: Clutch, Throw out, and the fly wheel? Or would just changing the throw out bearing be whats causing all the noise. And does the throw out bearing damage the clutch?

It actually depends on how much you want to spend on replacing more parts than necessary when that throwout bearing, by the way is hydraulic actuated, bursts, and ruins your clutch with an oil bath. Hmm, not forever, thats for sure. Your money.
