Depends on the sound you want. I prefer a Gibson (I have a ES 335, and I love it). To me, Gibsons have better craftsmanship. I love the tone of my guitar, the aesthetics, the feel, the neck, everything. My 335 makes a great full sounding rhythm guitar, and a great lead, I can get a bluesy sound, a "British Invasion" sound, or whatever I need. Buy a guitar for the tone, I'm sure my guitar wouldn't sound good for metal, but that's OK, as I don't play metal. A good band should have at least two guitar players who play different guitars. In one of my bands, I play my Gibson, and the other guy plays his Fender Strat, and they blend great, you don't want two guitars with the same tone or it gets to sound like mud.

I never bought a Strat because everyone seems to own one. I wanted something different.

My advise, if you're interested in buying, never buy anything before you play it, each guitar has a different feel. Find out which one suits you best. You don't buy a car before you drive it, same thing here.
