Column chromatography is a technique to separate compounds form a mixture. The size of the column depends on how differently the compounds, that are to be separated, move along the column. If the difference is large, a smallish column will do. Or else, a long thin column is needed, 'cause as the different molecules move, due to their different 'speed' of movement, the distance increases, making separation easier.
