remove snow and ice by sprinkling generous amounts of rock salt on surface

Spring. Unless you live in the Watertown, NY - then the best way is summer.

But, if you can't wait for the seasons to change, then the best way is to have someone else shovel it or snowblow it. It's better to do it while it's fresh and not walked or driven on - the pressure compacts the snow and it ices up and is much harder to remove.

Remove it from where?

Around where I live snow is a fact of life come december.

Invest in the following tools:
a plastic snow shovel with a steel edge ( this one stays near your home door)
a small kiddie shovel (to keep in your car to dig yourself out should you get into trouble or if more snow falls when you are away from home)
a snow brush/ice scraper combo.
a gallon of de-icer to put in your car's windshield washer.
a good pair of waterproof insulated gloves.
a good pair of hiking boots (Be sure to waterproof them!) or snow boots.

Some people get remote starters for cars. I just run out to my car and do it myself.

Snow throwers are only worth it when you have a long driveway and a yard that can catch all the thrown stuff. BTW, you are not supposed to shovel it onto someone else's way, or out into the street.

1. Shovel it

2. Snow blower

3. Truck with lift attached to shovel it out of long driveways or when there is a lot of accumulation.

4. Invite kids in the neighborhood to bring their shovels and dig you out giving them something for their trouble.

5. You only put ice melt (salt) on icy areas, never snow.

a shovel or salt. be careful with using water. it may freeze over and in the morning you could slip and fall really hard. :)
