Dressing up on Halloween is a tradition that goes way, way back to ancient Celtic cutlures in Britain and Ireland. The Celts celebrated Samhain during the first week of November. They believed that during Samhain, spirits of the dead freely walked among the living. Scary masks were used to frighten away evil or bad-intentioned spirits.

Over many centuries, that ancient pagan Holiday got absorbed into the Catholic holiday All Saints Day. The people of Britain kept their pagan traditions, but instead of celebrating Samhain they were celebrating All Hallows Eve (Hallowe'en).

When Irish and British immigrants came to the united states in the 18th and 19th centuries, they brought their Halloween traditions with them. The celebration became popular and eventually became the Halloween we know today, with masks and candy and scary movies and jack-o-lanterns and all that.
