John Wooden. First, he is the consensus greatest college basketball coach of all time. (For those too young to remember, his UCLA teams won ten national championships, including seven in a row. Under him UCLA once won 88 games in a row. They won 38 NCAA tournament games in a row. His lifetime winning percentage is .813. The records go on and on. Obviously, he received numerous awards throughout his career.) But beyond this, he is a great humanitarian. His graduates, including Bill Walton and Kareem Abdul Jabaar, almost always cite playing for him as their most important point of development in their careers and lives. He influenced many others through his inspirational speeches and books.
John Wayne is a beloved movie star. But he was an actor. The things we remember him for are the roles he played, not the actual person he was. Many people loved those roles, but it's telling that in his long career he won only one Oscar and was nominated only one other time.
John Wooden wins because he is the real deal, not an actor. And his achievements in his field far surpass John Wayne's in his.
