No its not really the first episode of the first season. The pilot is like the second job interview for a TV show. The first is when the writer and producer of the show talk with a network executive and they say something like we like it lets do a pilot. They give enough money to cast the show and make one episode. Once this is made the show it to test audiences to see if they would fund an entire season. Sometimes this pilot is never seen because the audiences or the executives dont like a character, or they want to add a character, or for any of a million reasons. The first episode is called the pilot, sometimes the show never gets made, sometimes the pilot is never seen by the public, only what could be defined as episode 2 once the changes are made.

yes they are called "the pilot", and means something like a test, everyone who has an idea for a tv show, makes a pilot, a test of what the show is going to be, and if the network executives like it, they order a few more episodes, and start to air them

The first people to fly new aircraft were called "test pilots" starting back in the 1940's.

This career was exciting and new, lots of young boys wanted to have that for a career. This was just before the popularity of TV was kicking in. When a new TV show was presented to a test audience for their approval, this term was borrowed as the slang name. It was later shortened to just "pilot" for the new shows.
