Plot Summary for The Sound of Music (1965):
Maria had longed to be a nun since she was a young girl, yet when she became old enough discovered that it wasn't at all what she thought. Often in trouble and doing the wrong things, Maria is sent to the house of a retired naval captain, named Captain Von Trapp, to care for his children. Von Trapp was widowed several years before and was left to care for seven 'rowdy' children. The children have run off countless governesses. Maria soon learns that all these children need is a little love to change their attitudes. Maria teaches the children to sing, and through her, music is brought back into the hearts and home of the Von Trapp family. Unknowingly, Maria and Captain Von Trapp are falling helplessly in love, except there are two problems, the Captain is engaged, and Maria is a postulant!

sset91kw and dramaqueen have the best answers I've read so far. Falloutboyfranklin's answer sux! You want to know how I know, besides having seen it a few times in my life? I was raised in Dallas, and back then, in the 1960's, they had a well known movie theater (one of many) near my highschool, that only showed the best movies, and "Sound of Music" played there for at least one and a half years straight, a record that no other movie has ever equalled before or since. For whatever reason you need to know about "Sound of Music", I can assure you that if you fail to see it yourself, you will have deprived yourself of one of the best musicals/movies ever out, as the Dallas theater proved. Go rent the movie or buy it on the internet or whatever, but don't fail to see it. You are truly depriving yourself of the beauty, geographical and musical, as well as the wonderful sense in the movie, of which today's genre are not capable of matching. I'd take you to see it myself if I could because it is so beautiful, and the bigger the screen and better the sound system the better, and back when I saw it, there was no such thing as "twin theaters" or "10 or 12 or 20 theaters" in any one building, and so the screen was ENORMOUS by today's standards, and the sound was more than "Surround-Sound" could ever match, but you may still be able to see and hear and follow the wonder of that musical, which took place in the Alps and during the time of Nazi Germany, if my memory serves me correctly. I wish you the best in trying to see the movie. God Bless you.

The Sound Of Music is the TRUE STORY of the VOn Trapp Family (who were popular singers) and their story went exactly how Katie B describes it. They hid in exile for many years.
