A new puppy for Christmas awwwww, how sweet, well, i have a miniature dachshund hound (wiener dog) they are cute, short haired, very smart so easy to house train. I'd recommend a female they are easier to train though *smile*

First getting a puppy at Christmas is not a good idea. The reason is that it's a lot of stress on the puppy! It is better to get the dog at a time when there isn't so much going on and the dog can adjust to the new changes in it's environment.
Second, there is no such thing as a puppy that doesn't make messes! They are puppies, remember? It might be good to find an older dog that is already trained in the ways that you want.
As far as the small size there are a lot of great small dogs that would be very suitable for what you want. Just search for them!

What palbevman said. Adopting a dog from a shelter makes you a life-saver! Letting your daughter pick the pup, or at least letting her approve your choice, is a sure bet for a happy match. And if you care more about having a good dog than snob appeal, I suggest you look at a mixed-breed pup. Mixes are less temperamental, happier, healthier, much smarter, longer-lived dogs than purebreds, as a rule. If you're concerned about messes, read up on crate training and have a correct-sized crate (remembering that puppies grow fast!) ready BEFORE you and your daughter go to look at the pups at the shelter. As others have mentioned, waiting until the holidays are over is wiser in the long run for all concerned. Merry Christmas!

Tell her that the puppy will have to wait... Christmas is really not a good time for a new dog. It's already hard enough to settle down, but all the strange faces and the hectics of the holidays is enough to make the pup hide and never come out. Sorry though, you're not going to find a friendly, not messy dog without training.

Good Luck! Small, friendly dog is easy. Not messy? Thats something else.
Why not go to a local shelter and rescue an older dog, one already trainded so you dont have to worry about messes in the house. Besides they need love too and you'll feel good knowing you rescued him.

Go to your local shelter. They are great you can get a puppy for $40-$50 that comes spayed/nutered, its first set of shots and a coupon for a free vet visit to get the rest of the shots, and some times a bag of food. Most importantly they are equipt with a computer chip so if the dog is lost the can scan the chip and call you if the find your dog. I got my dog Kenny from a shelter and he is the greatest pet ever

Go to the pound and take your daughter with you even if you want it to be a surprise she will be better off picking the dog out herself.
the pound gets all types of dogs including puppies.
These dogs are vet treated before adoption and the next option is death for the dog so you will be doing the animal a great service also..

I agree with several here- go to a humane shelter, the animal will give you back lots of love for rescuing it. They have all sizes and some breeds, so take her and help her pick one out, you can take it for a walk on the grounds, talk to a volunteer to find out how it behaves, what tricks they have taught it, a good idea to try before you go spending big $$$ on something from a puppy mill.

Since you will be the one that takes care of it, mixed breeds tend to be calmer and smarter because of the lack of inbreeding. Poodles and other breeds (I can't think right now) don't shed. If the puppy is active and too playful, it can become a nuisance and not a blessing. Place the puppy on its back in your hands, if it lays there content, that may be the one you want.

Look in shelters. I'd recommend getting her the supplies for a puppy, then going with her after Christmas to look for the actual puppy.
