Get a fast one to start with. Changing processors won't help unless you change the clock speed to match, which is non-trivial. Best bet to speed up an existing machine: add more RAM. This will help some, but not a lot.

You can't make a noticeable difference in just a few minutes. You can start by clearing out all temp files. You can shut down any running program you don't need at the moment. Programs on the task bar or start-up file. Defragging the hard drive can take quite a while. You can scan your computer for viruses and spyware...but this is more than a few quick minutes. After you buy it at the store, you can add more Ram in a few minutes, if you have less than 256 MB now. Each computer has it's limits based on what you are doing at the time. There is no quick answer

press ctrl-alt-delete and end all unnecessary processes.
