you need to let your niece know in a nice but firm way that hey, she is not a woman until she finishes school, graduates, goes to college and makes someting out of herself while in the process of these changes she herself will see the pain and joy of BECOMING a woman. She has to learn about sacrifice, confidence, adversity, becoming independant, and learn the meaning of hard work. Once she goes throgh these things, get her own place then she will be considered a GROWN WOMAN because people will have alot more respect for seeing her struggle in this crazy world to get whats rightfully hers!!!!

Your niece's idea is very natural, because thousands of years ago, children were considered "men" or "women" when they reached puberty, around 12-13 - in fact this when Judaism still celebrates the beginning of manhood and womanhood.

However, in modern society, we now consider that somebody reaches adult status around 18-21.

Maybe you could tell your niece that in a way she is correct: she is no longer a little girl and has to start thinking about becoming a young woman - but that it is a long process, and that she won't become a full-grown woman for several more years.

I think it is really lovely that she is celebrating beginning her menstrual cycle in such a positive way.

I know that when I started my menstrual cycle I was a little happy and thought the same thing. But tell her that it is just a stepping stone into womanhood. Being a woman is more than just starting your cycle it is also about making good decisions and knowing that there are consequences for your actions. That's all I would say to her. In time she will learn that you are right.

She is a woman in the sense that she can conceive and produce a child. Other than that she is a 12 yo KID!! She needs to act like one and go out and play.

i would agree with you that she is not a woman yet. it's just like a boy thinking that he's a man just because he had sex for the first time at 12. explain to her that becoming a woman has nothing to do with your body. being a woman is about your attitude, your life experiences, and the way you carry yourself. her body is changing into one that is closer to a woman's body, but she is not yet a woman.

What is wrong with her thinking she is a woman? A strong independant woman who doesn't have to do something just because some guy tells her he wants to?

This is where you explain to her that she is on her way to becoming a woman. Being a woman is being honest, mature, loving, etc. Until she is all of those things she is on her way. Once she is all of those things (regardless of age) she is a woman. Good luck
