You lose your electronic tag that you use to pay tolls on highways. It costs $24 to replace the tag, and the cost of the toll would be $3 if you don't use your tag. It would be half of that when you do. How many times would you need to use the tags to pay for the toll in order for the total cost to be the same as not using the tag?

I came up with the equation:
24+1.5x=3x

x stands for how many times you need to pass through. I got the answer 12, but I know it sin't right. I checked it, and the answer was suppose to be 16. I want to know if my equation is wrong, or if I am solving it wrong

Hello, Maddi. You are on the right track with your equation. Let's look at it:

Your equation is: 24 + 1.5x = 3x

First, let's solve for x. That will give us: 24 = 1.5x.

Next, let's solve for x again. 24/1.5 = 16. Therefore, x = 16.

Let's check it. 16 times 1.5 = 16 + 8 = 24. Your equation was correct, but you just solved it wrong.

Your equation is correct, but you are solving it wrong:

24 + 1.5x = 3x

(Subtract 1.5x from both sides of the equation)

24 = 3x - 1.5x = 1.5x

(Divide both sides by 1.5)

24 / 1.5 = x = 16

Your equation is right, but yout answer is wrong. Follow:

3x = 1.5x + 24 (I prefer the x value first)
1.5x = 24 (subtract 1.5x from both sides)
x = 16 (divide both sides by 1.5)

you have the right equation
24 + 1.5x = 3x
24 +1.5x - 1.5x = 3x - 1.5x
(because what you do to one side of the equation you do to the other)
24 = 1.5x
x = 24/1.5 = 16

24 + 1.5x = 3x
24 = 3x - 1.5x
24 = 1.5x
24 = (3/2)x
x = (2/3) * 24
x = 16

You equation is correct but you must have missed something in solving it...

The equation is ok.
Which means that 1.5 x = 24
so x = 16
I don't know how you got 12
