As a retired mental health professional with 20+ years experience, I've seen that internal or external stimuli drive our foci from one subject to another. The same is true with any one subject, such as religion which you ask about, as with between subjects, such as Harley-Davidsons and dirigibles. If you are wanting to change your focus between two issues or whatever within religion, doing what smeezled said is a good way. Also your memory, recollections of what you've formed in your mind and emotions, is a good way to alter or redirect your thinking. Prayer is also a very effective way to do that within the religion subject, however it is you perceive and practice prayer. And then again, the good ol' deliberate, conscious decision to think differently within the subject of religion, or any subject, is a very effective way to divert your thinking from any one subject to another or from any one aspect of any one subject to another, and then to repeat your new thinking is a perfect way to imbed it in your psyche and your behaviors. God Bless you.

We move our consciousness around in the "storehouse" we call the mind much like a big spotlight. By swinging our attention to a specific subject or object we can concentrate our conscious attention on that one thing, while our subsconscious continues to process tens of thousands of bits of information per second.

Unless you are a female, and then you would be able to swing your conscious attention to more than one thing at a time. We call it multi tasking. And if your Momma couldn't have done that, you wouldn;t be alive right now to ask your question.

Controling our thought life is a learned skill. Changing the way we think has to be a matter of our will. Then when our mind drifts back to the old pattern, we have to take those thoughts captive and say out loud, "These are not my thoughts", as a way of kicking them out of our minds. I believe that our spirit should dominate and the mind and body have to follow and obey.
Good Luck.

Allow yourself to exist in a changing/evolving or new situation (literally or figuratively) conducive to stimulating new, better, preferred thoughts. In short - put a trigger in place to take your thoughts elsewhere.

Do you mean how do we change our perceptions? For that, our opinions change as a result of new information, and generally we correlate parts that appeal to us into a culmination that is positive to our view.
