All of the previous answers are WRONG. It becomes illegal to download a file when you DO NOT OWN the actual CD (Whether you paid for LimeWire or not.) If you own, say, Avril Lavigne's CD, meaning you bought it in the store at retail price, and it gets scratched & will not play anymore, you can LEGALLY download every song on that CD because you own the retail CD. Same as a game, you can download a game as long as you own it for your system. Now, if you DO NOT own whatever you are downloading (purchased from a store) then it becomes illegal, and you are able to be prosecuted for piracy. Hope this clears things up for u.

If you are using the Free version of limewire, downloading anything is illegal. But if you paid for your version of Limewire, you are protected by the copyright laws for personal use.

Basically, downloading anything copyrighted for free without permission is illegal. If it's not copyrighted, it's not illegal.

it is ilegal when you first download a song, because it is illegal to download music for free. it is illegal because the artists/singers sing the songs and to get them you are supposed to pay, so downloading music for free is like steeling.
