After we set the dial to wash, the water starts to fill the tub. However, after a brief moment, I hear a sound as if a valve is closing and the water reduces to a small trickle. If I fill the tub using buckets, the machine will go through the wash cycle, but the problem repeats during the rinse cycle.

I would like to fix this myself to save money. Do you know of a web site with information about fixing appliances, or do you have any suggestions yourself?

This is a GREAT do it yourself repair site. I've used it several times for washing machine, dryer, electric stove repairs. Saved me a TON of money.

Take the hoses off the inlet valve at the rear of your machine and put them into the washer tub. Turn the water on full blast and see how well the water is flowing and how much rust and other gunk comes out. Check the screens of the inlet valve for blockage but DO NOT REMOVE them. If they are blocked you can back flush the valve by connecting one of the hoses to one side of the inlet valve and with the washer set for warm wash turn the machine on and catch the water coming out of the open port of the valve in a cup or bucket or suitable container. Use a small paint brush to help loosen the dirt and then do the other port. Check the end of the hoses that connect to the hose bib as well for filter screens and clean them if present.

Hook everything back up making sure that you have the hot to the hot and cold to cold and try to fill the machine. If you still have the same problem you need to replace the inlet valve.

I'd get your dad around to do it but if you have tinkered and fixed it before I don't doubt you, anyone but a mechanic can diagnose the problem just get them to put it back together after you have replaced the spin driving cog or whatever it is stopping it from locking on. If it is just too broken you just blame your husband for being useless at maintenance my sister's husband does this stuff and I would get him, but I have to make do with Penfold as he is the reason they invented washing machines and a maintenance engineer. I could ask him whats going on for you when he's done with his customer, if I haven't nailed it ;) (((Good luck India))) EDIT He said you know more than us about it :)

RepairClinic.com

Good help guides and diagrams. Most all parts available, competetive prices and reasonable shipping. Used them a number of times.

You might try shutting off the water supplies (you can start the machine to fill on Warm setting and it might relieve the pressure and leave less H2O on the floor) and disconnect hoses from the machine side hose bib. There usually is a screen in each hose fitting to block grit, rust etc. Clean the screens and try it again. You may get lucky!

just turn off water and check at hose connection, there is usually a screened washer . make sure it isnt plugged on hot side. if not then water valve is probably bad and should be replaced. very easy job. just take down make and model when going to appliance store for new one and it will have very detailed instructions on how to change it. about $30.00 for new one. hope this info helps.
