Due to our countries governance of the people, by the people and for the people, the definition of what it means to be an American is UP TO YOU.
Not particularly you in person, but up to each generation to reinforce and protect the components of our national identity that they value. For example, the phrase I just used: "Of the people, by the people, for the people"? It's from Lincolns Gettysburg address in the 1860's. Before that time it was not even for-sure that we even WERE a single country. But that generation ABSOLUTELY made it part of what it is to be an American.
So learn as much as you can about our government, and our history and jump in and make your voice heard. Because that is what it means to be an American.

Patriotism bordering on nationalism. Having a sense of entitlement, not from what they have personally done for their country, but from the accomplishments of previous generations. Truly believing in the superiority of their country. Militaristic. Lovers of team sports. High achievers. Charitable.
From an outside point of view.

What it means to be an American to me is this. I can live in the greatest nation under God where I am allowed to be what I want and say what I please. In my opinion it is such an honor and privilege to live in the good old USA. If I'm on my dieing bed and the National Anthem is played my husband has instructions to jack up my bed immediately. Can you tell I'm proud? I sure hope so.

wut it means to be an American in my belief an American is a person a civilian of the country born or received status as a civilian that is the sense of wut it is in the name but in the ideology of an image of an American is a person of the country they live in not necessarily liking every thing of the country cause they do have free minds nd the ability to their own opinion but its a person beyond that that no matter wut loves the country they live in for wut it is in any sense loyal not to maybe the people but to the group if America is the country ur in then this is how you should feel about it and that makes you an American one with pride and joy no matter what to say that they are from America and willing to Honor what it means no matter the cost cause if you didn't then you should go to some other place and live there

Since Americans vary so much, it just means "to live in America" to me.
