Since the Republican party now believes in big government, irresponsible fiscal policy, and regulating behavior, should we simply say they are left-wing?

Wouldn't a right-wing/conservative party try to shrink the government, maintain fiscal discipline, and reduce government interference in private lives.?

I guess the only thing conservative I see in the Republican party now is support for the military and guns.

This Republican party as you know it today are a harken back to the old Republican ideals before Regan. During the Nixon and Ford administrations, the Republicans were all about big brother and secretive policies.

Well, since there was only one politial party originally, the Democrtatic Party. That party split into two, and evolved into what we now know as the Republican vs. Democrat. I believe it is always good to challenge each other, but it must be done in a respectfull way. Ronnald Regan was a democrat once, but as he put it, " I am not leaving the democratic party, the democratic party left me". But more on point, that slope has been sliding very quickly, and the republican party is almost caught up with the dems.
Just in closing, America is only as strong as her people. Polititians don't set pollicy, the people do. (just think about it)

No, I wouldn't say so. In fact, I believe that just the opposite is true. Our country is skewed to the right; the modern Democratic party is right-wing, Republicans are just more so.

I think that your error in judgment is probably a common one. I would attribute it to two main factors: 1) the politics of George W. Bush, which are not at all representative of the politics of the actual Republican Party (Reagan, for example, wouldn't be in Iraq right now) and 2) the fact that the political climate in the United States of America is much, much, MUCH, MUCH more conservative than that of most major industrialized nations around the world.

If you really must question government see the other options. Look at federalism, communism, even the whig philosophy. If you see a flaw in government, look for another option. If you enjoy guns so much would you prefer a police state? Federalism would give the government even more control over us, communism would control our daily lives completely, the whig philosophy would aloow an idiotic president to live in a world of peace. Politics is hard to perfect, for it is controlled by humans

The republicans aren't left wing they are authoritarian corporatists. Left wing implies some kind of wealth redistribution to the "have less" people. Republicans beleive in wealth redistribution to the "have mores" as well as preservation of that wealth in the hands of the few.

yes, to a degree... it's funny when Democrats are saying "uh, what's with all the spending?"... but apparently that's the point we are at...

they are also Conservative morally, but that almost goes against conservative government ideas that the government should stay out of personal business...
