LaVoisier discovered that matter does not just "disappear or appear" it must go somewhere. He understood that the total mass of the reactants is always equal to the total mass of the products in a chemical reaction.

In other words, if you start with 10 grams of reactants you will end up with 10 grams of products.

the law of conservation of matter and mass is that "matter can not be either created or destroyed" and also with mass "mass cannot be either created or destroyed"
