There are a lot of good answers for this question. I'll give you my top 4.

4. Ken Kennedy. This guy is on a quick rise. He has great mic skills and great in ring skills not to mention a killer finisher.
3. The Undertaker. Taker is nearing the end of his career and hasn't held the title since 2002. It would be nice to see him on top of the wrestling world one more time.
2. Chris Benoit. He has the best in ring skills today right behind Kurt Angle. He only had his one stinct as champion and could go for another.

All these guys are deserving. But Kennedy is young and has plenty of time to get the title again, Undertaker has held the title 4 times and has nothing to prove, and Benoit can't draw the crowds as much as wrestlers with better personas can. That is y there is only one number one answer.
1. Kane. Kane is nearing the end of his career along with Taker but unlike his kayfabe brother, Kane has held the title for aprox 1 day... 1 day. Kane is considered one of the hardest working wrestlers the WWE has. He is also one of the most humble considering he was offered the chance to end the Undertakers streak at Mania this year but he turned it down out of respect for Taker's legacy. He also turned down the chance to get the title knowing that stars like Batista and Cena were on the rise. But I say give him the title before he goes out. He has great ring skills, great mic skills, and a phenominal gimick that he plays freakishly well.

Honerable mentions are Finlay, Booker, and Henry. All of these men have been in the biz for a long time. Unfortunatly not many of them get over with the crowds so they will not likely see any title action besides Booker.

I agree with the answer above me. I heard, and this may not be a rumor, that the Undertaker will face Batista at Wrestlemania 23 for the World Heavywieght Championship. And the writers said that they will end his 14 year WM win with 14-1 in that match. This could be an untrue rumor, but then again, it could be true.

I am sure that HHH will somehow get his name into the ring for the title, but in reality, either Benoit or Kane.... They're too of the best workers and haven't had a serious title run, and they both deserve it..
Although I think Sharmell should somehow get the belt.. First husband and wife to hold the Heavyweight title, that would prove interesting, albeit for about 10 seconds, then have Teddy Long, come down, and prove she cheated, give the belt back to Batista.

Of course, they've done similar like when one of the Godfathers Ho's won the belt (I believe it was Victorias first role in WWE) who then was forced to lie down for the Godfather..

King Booker has had his chance as have Finlay. They shouldn't get anymore. And to be honest there really isn't anyone else on Smackdown! that deserves a #1 contender spot save for The Undertaker, Kane (maybe) and Chris Benoit.

Definitely Chris Benoit, because he is the BEST WRESTLER on Smackdown and in the WWE. Oh, and if these two face each other Benoit would kick Batista's *** and show him what real wrestlers do! I hope that answers your question.

If undertaker finishes his business with kennedy anytime soon then it should be the deadman. He deserves another chance at the gold. Besides undertaker doesn't care who he faces, as long as he gets a shot at the title, many of the wwe fans will be on his corner.

truthfully, it's getten old watch the same people on both raw and smackdown go after the titles. but dependen on the out come of some of the matches at the next pay-per-view, it could be Kennedy, MVP, OR EVEN CHAVIO

Benoit or Taker. They are two high cards that WWE would book for the championship.
