Looking back I thought I was a WOMAN all my life. But i really felt like I became a woman - in the sense I think you're talking about, in my mid thirties. There is a change in the way you feel about yourself. It's like, yeah, this is who I am. I'm powerful, beautiful, and I control my life. I realized after this fact that I hadn't really been a WOMAN till then. You know it when it hits you.

From the stand point of a biologist, a female is a woman when she has become sexually mature and is capable of reproducing the species (i.e. when a human female starts her period and is ovulating). She may be too young emotionally and mentally to live on her own in our complex modern society, but in ancient/native cultures, girls became women after they had their periods and got married shortly afterward. In many modern native cultures they still have coming of age ceremonies shortly after girls have their first menses and they often still get married shortly after that. Just because a person hasn't learned enough to deal with life alone in our particular culture, does not mean that she is not a woman yet, it just means that she is a young woman who is still learning how to survive this modern world. If you are capable of having a baby then you are a woman; anybody who believes otherwise is being effected by cultural beliefs and modern customs.

What makes a woman is finally finding out how to make a man feel like he's on top of the world. An old Russian saying goes like this: "A man is the head of the family... but the woman is the neck, when she turns right he has to turn right and when she turns left he must too."
I LOVE that! You're a woman when you're strong enough to allow yourself to occasionally be weak!! ;o)

As soon as you have to suffer terrible cramps I believe you earn the right of being called a woman. If you don't get cramps, when you give birth. I've been a woman since age 10.

Whaaaat? Obviously, you already have a particular preconceived notion of what it means, so please share that first.

I've been a woman since I was 13. That's when I started menstruating and had my Bat Mitzvah. I became more mature when I got married and had my son. I am now definitely a GROWN woman... approaching 40 with a son close to graduating and a 17 year marriage.

According to our sex, we are born a woman.

Biologically, it is largely assumed that one becomes a woman after her first menstration.

According to our gender (which is what sex we are mentally), it's how you feel. Do you feel like a woman? Do you think like a woman.

I think it is a title you give yourself, when you feel ready, and when it suits you to an advantage. Many women still refer to themselves as girls when the feel like it, and when they want to seem younger.
